I’m not much of a walker, but I have joined my wife on occasion as she gets her weekend exercise walking the roads surrounding our place. We walk about a four mile loop and while plodding along I started to take note of the variety of trash tossed out the windows of passing vehicles.
There’s plenty to choose from, but this is not so much a rant about the lack of regard for keeping the roads pristine as it is an observation of the kinds of consumables strewn along our country roads.
I’m into biking these roads, and as such, am moving faster which leaves less time to study the trash as I go by. Walking past these hastily strewn piles gives one the chance to ponder the dietary and lifestyle choices of these litterbugs. Not good.
Fast food, enough alcoholic containers to make a bartender envious, chewing tobacco tins and cigarette butts galore. I find the extinguished cigarette butts in half consumed beer or cheap liquor containers encouraging as it must mean they’re doing their part to prevent forest fires, unlike the overwhelming amount of careless smokers that toss lit butts out the window.
This is not to say that everything we find isn’t beneficial. A nice LED flashlight, extension and bungee cords, an Apple Digital Pencil, some money but that’s rare, miscellaneous nuts & bolts. Work gloves that were left on a bumper or roof of a car or truck. Unmentionables? Well…there's tampons and condoms which indicate some form of birth control, and plenty of Huggies and baby wipes to suggest otherwise.
I don't know where you come down on population control, but sterilization as punishment for this sector of people would go a long way towards highway beautification.
